Fort Funston is designated for intermediate level flying, so pilots now have to learn the sport elsewhere in the Bay Area before earning the ability to fly at Funston. The group still oversees the site today, ensuring safety and compliance. When the fort first became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), local hang gliding pilots formed an organization called the Fellow Feathers in order to seek a special use permit for their flying endeavors. They can get above the clouds, allowing you to see a rainbow that pilots call a glory. It’s also known for the “Funston Shear,” a weather pattern where two air masses collide into each other and pilots can get an extra boost in the air. Plus, there’s even an ample parking lot and a clubhouse to store equipment if need be. It has consistently flyable winds year round, a convenient top landing (the ability to land where you launch, as opposed to flying from the top of a mountain to the bottom) and the ocean views are stunning. Today, Fort Funston is known as one of the best spots to hang glide in the country, Low said. He headed to Fort Funston, then a defunct Nike missile launch site still owned by the military, and took two days of lessons, jumping off a dune for hours. During this time we don't operate any hang gliding or paragliding flights. He was 13 years old when he cashed in a savings bond his grandmother had gifted him and paid $600 to get his very own hang glider.
